FAQ

How does the MARVELous Maine Invitational work?

This is a self-discovery program that encourages participants to take control of their own learning and utilize their lifelong learning skills through exploration and PLAY. Participants are encouraged to work together and share with each other their discoveries, techniques and “how to’s” both in person and through their blogs. In addition, you can contact the MARVELous Maine Invitational Team (Mamie Anthoine Ney, Valerie Osborne, and Stephanie Zurinski).

How do I access the electronic resources?

Inside your school or library you should have direct click-and-go access to all the resources listed here except Ancestry which is only available in public libraries.  To access MARVEL from home, you must set up a free account.

If you have questions about access, contact the MARVELous Maine Invitational Team.

Who can participate in the Invitational?

  • Maine academic, public, and school library and teaching staff regardless of position and status (full and part time).
  • Maine public library trustees and friends.

How long do I have to complete the Invitational and how much time will it take?

The MARVELous Maine Invitational will begin September 30, 2012 and end December 16, 2012. This includes 10 weekly lessons, with an additional week’s time to complete assignments and do some extra playing around with resources of special interest. Since this is a self-directed learning program, you decide how much time you need to complete the lessons. Some participants may choose to devote one hour per week; it can be broken up into 15 minutes a day. Library directors are encouraged to give staff work time to complete the program. Participants who do the program at home or on their own time may elect to spend more time with the lessons.

How do I track my progress for the Invitational?

All participants in the Invitational will keep a blog to track their progress. A minimum of one posting per lesson is required, but we hope you’ll have more than that to blog about!

I don’t feel comfortable with my colleagues reading my blog. Can I participate anonymously?

Yes, you can choose a “screen name” for your blogging identity if you want to remain anonymous. However, you need to share your blog information with MSL staff so we can track your progress.

What if I need help? Who can I call?

Since this program is self-directed, you are encouraged to work with colleagues along your journey of discovery. Often you will find your questions answered by checking out other participant blogs. You can also contact Mamie, Valerie, Stephanie or other participants for help.

Will I receive Continuing Education (CE) Contact Hours for this?

Yes! This class is eligible for 9 continuing education contact hours. Once you have completed your assignments, you’ll need to complete the post-Invitational survey.  The link to the CE certificate will be there.    For more information about contact hours and recertification for school librarians, see the information put together by Maine’s School Library Consultant.
